Service Events
Because United to Serve Week at UT Austin is April 15-21, in conjunction with National Volunteer Week, there are lots of volunteer opportunities available for students, faculty, and staff. Saturday, April 14th will kick off the week with some major annual events including Keep Austin Beautiful’s Clean Sweep and UT’s Longhorn Run, and Saturday, April 21st will end the week with several great chances to connect with the community throughout Austin. Site descriptions and sign-ups are listed below!
Saturday, April 14
Clean Sweep - Keep Austin Beautiful’s annual citywide cleanup. Join thousands of others in cleanup projects around the city, followed by a volunteer party at Fiesta Gardens which includes free lunch, live music, environmental activities, door prizes and more! Earth Day Festival - McKinney Roughs Nature Park is hosting it’s annual Earth Day Festival on April 14th. Assistance in various outdoor and indoor programs will be required. Lunch will be provided and all volunteers should wear comfortable shoes. For more information, email or call 512-473-3218.
Gustavo ‘Gus” Garcia Park and Recreation Center– is seeking 15-20 volunteers to help with park clean-up and beautification efforts. Volunteers will be removing brush and bulk items from the perimeter of Fiskville Cemetary, which is adjacent to Gus Garcia Park. Volunteers are needed from 9:00am-11:30am and will receive a free t-shirt and are invited to attend the a volunteer party at Fiesta Gardens which includes free lunch, live music, environmental activities, door prizes and more! Habitat for Humanity (FULL) – The UT Austin Student Chapter of Habitat for Humanity will host a work day from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Volunteers will provide building construction support at a local site, all materials are provided by Habitat for Humanity. This project is labor intensive and requires prior training.
Longhorn Run – The 2012 Longhorn Run Committee, UT Student Government, and RecSports present the 2012 Longhorn Run to benefit the Excellence Run, a Student Government endowment dedicated to UT student projects and programs. The 10K race will begin at 8:00a.m., followed by a 2-mile race at 8:15a.m. Volunteers are needed leading up to the race and race day. Sign up to volunteer by 4/11/12.
Saturday, April 21
Habitat for Humanity (FULL) – the UT Austin Student Chapter of Habitat for Humanity will host a work day from 8:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Volunteers will provide building construction support at a local site, all materials are provided by Habitat for Humanity. Langford Elementary – landscaping/gardening, building benches, general clean-up around the school. Volunteers will work from 9:00am-12:00pm. Parking will be available at the school (2206 Blue Meadow Drive Austin, TX 78744) – families and friends are encouraged as well, in honor of Earth Day!
Mendez Middle School – creating garden beds, painting a US map in the school courtyard, general clean-up around the school. Volunteers will work from 9:00am-12:00pm. Parking will be available at the school (5106 Village Square Austin, TX 78744) – families and friends are encouraged as well, in honor of Earth Day!
Reilly Elementary (FULL) – in celebration of Earth Day, Reilly elementary will hosting a beautification project on its school grounds. Volunteers are needed from 8:00a.m. until 2:00p.m. to assist with gardening, building planter benches, regular benches, and a speaker podium.
